Creating a Workplace Veterans Can Return To

At Astound, some of our colleagues are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We think often of their safety — and of the day we’ll welcome them back to work. That welcome, we believe, shouldn’t be improvised.

Veteran reintegration isn’t just a matter of returning someone’s email address or reactivating a laptop. The transition from military service to civilian life — especially during wartime — is deeply personal, and often challenging. It touches everything from how someone relates to a team, to how they rebuild confidence in their role.

That’s why we’ve been working across Astound to create a thoughtful, human approach to veteran reboarding.

A Framework Grounded in Real Experience

From the start, we followed a principle widely recognized in veteran support work: nothing for veterans without veterans.

To honor that, we formed a Veteran Advisory Board — a small group of Astound employees with military service experience who shared firsthand insight throughout the process. In close collaboration with them, as well as L&D, Function Leads, and HRBPs, we co-created a framework that includes:

  • A personalized reboarding roadmap, co-designed with each returning veteran
  • Guidance for People Leaders, HR, Project and Function Leads on reboarding best practices
  • A communication and interaction training for teams
  • Emotional and logistical support through the Employee Assistance Program

Beyond Frameworks – Shaping Culture

We know policies and frameworks alone aren’t enough. What truly matters is the environment veterans return to — and that’s shaped by the people around them.

To help all Astounders play a role in that, we created a short training video on how to support returning veterans with empathy and respect. The message is simple: you don’t need to know what someone has been through. You just need to be present, respectful, and open.

Why We’re Sharing This

This work was designed with Astound’s teams in mind — but the lessons extend far beyond our walls. We’re not the first to take steps in this direction, and we’re grateful to the many organizations, experts, and veterans who’ve paved the way.

Our hope is that by sharing our approach, we contribute to a growing community of companies committed to building veteran reintegration practices that go deeper than checklists — and center respect, support, and belonging.

With gratitude to our Veteran Advisory Board and to everyone across Astound who helped shape this program with care, perspective, and purpose.
